This is a picture of the tarantula nebula. It is a large star forming region, is more that 1,000 light-years in diameter, and is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. I love that APOD referes to this nebula as a "cosmic arachnid". I must say, it has a very ugly name for something so beautiful. In this nebula there are stellar winds, supernova shocks, and radiation. It is located in the constellation Dorado and is surrounded by other violent star-forming regions.Friday, May 2, 2008
